Tahoe gets fresh in time for SnowFest
Let's face it, our winter was dismal to say the least, but she's here, and here now. So if you've been wating for a great weekend to get up the hill, this is it - say hello to the North Lake Tahoe Snow Fest.
Skiers, riders and crazy swimmers are rejoicing as nearly a foot of fresh fell at higher elevations last night in the Tahoe basin and just in time for the commencement of the North Lake Tahoe Snowfest. Although the ten (10) day-long event officially begins tonight, the real fun starts Friday at Squaw Valley with what it's all about - skiing and snow. But by midday, one of the most famous DJ troupes in all of Northern, California will be holding down the ones-and-twos at the KT Base Bar deck.
There's so much going on thru the week, but here are our top picks of events from the 33rd Annual Snowfest.
Friday, February 28: Après Ski with The Space Cowboys from noon 'til dusk at the KT Base Bar deck behind the Funitel. The Spacecowboys are one of the longest running DJ outfits on the West Coast with notable residencies at world famous venues such as The Pink Mammoth in Black Rock Desert! After a day on the slopes, lighten up those feet and put those puts away so you can boogie to the infectuous beats that have rocked this event for more years than I can recall.Fireworks show at 7pm, and then the main boogie goes down at Olympic House for the 21+ crowd only.
Saturday, March 1: 25th Annual Gar Woods Polar Bear Swim: Men and women compete in two divisions, racing some 250 yards in 39 degree (F) water. Last year, the reigning women's champion, also beat all the men, again! This event is supervised by the United States Coast Guard and is noted as the most difficult short race in open water in all of California - if not the entire West Coast. Of course, spectators will enjoy good food and libations while swimmers nervously wonder, "What the hell did I just sign up for?" Some dozen men were rescued last year by the USCG - come watch the fun, or even worse, get wet. Check in at 1:30, races start at 2:30.
