Outside LandsAugust 29 - 30
at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, CA
Year two, the crazy whacko's over at Another Planet are bringing Beastie Boys, Pearl Jam, Incubus, Thievery Corporation, Tom Jones, Silversun Pickups, Q-Tip, Dave Matthews Band, Black Eyed Peas, The Mars Volta, M.I.A., Jason Mraz, TV on the Radio, Mastadon, Trombone Shorty and many more!
This may be the biggest festival of the summer named tagged 'Outside Lands" during the 19th century because of it's road less, uninhabitable terrain. Today, this area is known as Golden Gate Park comprised of more than 1,000 acres (an acre is roughly the size of an American football field).
Major bands playing the Sacramento show (Marysville, CA)
include:NOFX, Fishbone, Saosin, The Devil Wears Prada, Thrice, Chiodos K Serra many many more. The Vans WarpedTour started out with a punk rock format in 1995, but has evolved to include other styles of music. Built into the layout is the Vans half-pipe for BMX and skaters to showcase their skills, usually next to the main stage. With nearly 100 bands playing about 10 different stages, it's impossible to take it all in.
As with any large undertaking, there is plenty of criticism - mostly about the abundant commercialism-consumerism and branding involved. There has been a considerable push lately bringing Christian rock bands which has caused angst from 'true punk bands," especially with regards to opinions over same-sex marriage.
Broadway Calls criticized the tour for the number of pop and Christian bands on the 2008 tour stating...
"When there are 60 bands a day, and a majority of them are made up of either Christian jocks that play REALLY HEAVY MUSIC for Jesus, or pop bands with the only thing separating them from boy bands like Backstreet Boys are their dropped D tuned guitars hanging from their shoulders, it's hard to be comfortable. I look around, and quickly realize that the only difference between this and a huge frat party is that all these idiots play music. Bad music. Unfuckinglistenable music."
For better of worse, the Vans Warped Tour is full of music, both new and old. Take some time to check out the band lists for the date of the show you plan to attend and make an itinerary to hear what you want and not get 'stuck' listening to Christian punk which is an odd combination for Sacvibe to get into. We find true spirituality does not need to be branded as such and promoting any one religion over another as superior is awkward to say the least, and offensive at worst. IRIE!
